ARE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY PREPARED FOR THE HURRICANE SEASON?
June 1st, marked the start of the Atlantic hurricane season, which will end on November 30. Are you prepared?
Making an emergency kit is crucial to ensuring that you and your family survive on your own after an emergency. Being prepared means having enough food, water, and other supplies to last for at least 72 hours.
A basic emergency supply kit could include the following recommended items:
- Water (one gallon per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation)
- Food (at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food)
- Battery-powered or hand crank radio
- Flashlight
- First aid kit
- Extra batteries
- Whistle (to signal for help)
- Plastic sheeting and duct tape (to shelter in place)
- Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)
- Wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities)
- Manual can opener (for food)
- Copies of personal documents (medication list and pertinent medical information, proof of address, deed/lease to home, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies).
- Cell phone with charger.
- Family and emergency contact information.
- Extra cash (ATMs might be inoperable).
- Extra fuel for the generator and car.
