Geographical Information System Day 2015
GIS Day 2015 was held on November 23rd, 2015, at the Shaw Park Multi-Cultural Complex. GIS Day provides an international forum for users of geographic information systems (GIS) technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society. Mrs Valene Smith GIS Specialist (TEMA) was the forum’s Master of Ceremonies and exhibitors consisted of: Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA), GISCAD Everglow Limited, Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Services, College of Science, Technology and Applied Arts of Trinidad and Tobago and Department of Advanced Training and Advisory Services. The audience comprised mainly of high school students of the various schools in Tobago.
Objectives of the GIS day consisted of:
- Increased awareness of GIS
- Integration of GIS into the THA (EGIS)
- GISTT Chapter/Cohort established
- Standardization of software and metadata
- Linking of Professionals with Students (Visiting the schools)
- GIS in the classroom & GIS Camp
The forum ended with a treasure hunt with students utilizing GPS to identify the location of various items and they were quizzed on the information learned throughout the event.
